Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin – meaning our bodies cannot store it so it needs to be consumed every day. Contrary to popular belief it wont stop you catching colds and bugs but it will help you fight them off quicker and colds may be less severe as your immune system will be stronger.

It has many functions in our systems, Vitamin C helps with wound healing, and consuming vitamin C increases the amount of iron we can absorb from plant sources, like spinach, broccoli and sprouts. So trying to combine foods with Vitamin C and iron in the same meal will power up your iron absorption too.

Vitamin C is one of many antioxidants that may protect against damage caused by free radicals. Research suggests that free radicals can build up and contribute to the development of health conditions such as cancer, heart disease and arthritis.

If you eat a balanced diet you should easily consume enough daily. 1 kiwi fruit contains your daily amount! (adults need 40mg) Vitamin C rich foods are:

  • oranges and citrus
  • kiwis
  • red and green peppers
  • kale
  • strawberries
  • blackcurrants
  • broccoli
  • brussel sprouts
  • tomatoes

Another reason to make sure you get your 5 (at least!) a day.
